MODULE 3

Prompt Engineering

AI Skills for Work & Everyday Life

⏱ 2 Hours 🎯 Beginner 💬 Prompting Skills

Welcome to Module 3

Welcome to Module 3 of AI Skills for Work & Everyday Life.

In this module, you will learn one of the most important practical skills for using modern AI tools: prompt engineering.

A prompt is the instruction or question you give to an AI system. The quality of your instructions can strongly influence the usefulness of the response you receive.

Module Objective:
Learn how to write clear, specific and effective prompts that help AI produce useful results for work, study, business and everyday life.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • Explain what a prompt is.
  • Understand the basic principles of prompt engineering.
  • Give AI a useful role and context.
  • Write clear instructions.
  • Use examples to improve AI responses.
  • Refine prompts when the first response is not useful.
  • Identify common prompting mistakes.
  • Create practical prompts for work, study and business.
LESSON 3.1

What is Prompt Engineering?

Prompt engineering is the process of creating and improving instructions given to an AI system so that it can produce a more useful response.

A prompt can be as simple as a question or as detailed as a complete set of instructions.

❌ Simple Prompt
Write an email.

This prompt is very general. The AI does not know who the email is for, what the purpose is or what tone should be used.

✅ Better Prompt
Write a professional email to a student reminding them that their course payment is due. Keep the message polite and respectful. Keep it under 100 words. Ask the student to contact the office if they have already made payment.

This prompt provides much more information, making it easier for the AI to produce a useful response.

💡 Key Idea: Good prompting is not about using complicated words. It is about giving clear instructions and enough useful context.
LESSON 3.2

The Anatomy of a Good Prompt

A strong prompt often contains several important elements.

Element Purpose
Role Tell AI who or what it should act as.
Context Explain the situation.
Task Tell AI exactly what you want done.
Instructions Explain how the response should be produced.
Format Tell AI how the answer should be structured.
Examples Show AI what you mean when necessary.

🔑 The Basic Prompt Formula

ROLE + CONTEXT + TASK + INSTRUCTIONS + FORMAT

Example

Role: Act as a professional administrative assistant.

Context: I work at a community development centre.

Task: Create a reminder message for students whose registration documents are incomplete.

Instructions: Use simple, polite and professional language.

Format: Create a short WhatsApp message.

Remember: You do not always need every element. Use the information that is useful for the task.
LESSON 3.3

Giving AI a Role

One useful prompting technique is to tell the AI what role it should take.

This helps establish the perspective, style or type of assistance you want.

Examples of Roles

  • Act as a teacher.
  • Act as a marketing assistant.
  • Act as a business consultant.
  • Act as a CV editor.
  • Act as a customer-service representative.
  • Act as a research assistant.
  • Act as a presentation designer.
  • Act as an administrative assistant.

Example

Act as a career coach. I am applying for an entry-level administrative position. Help me prepare for the interview. Ask me one question at a time and provide constructive feedback after each answer.
💡 Prompting Tip: Choose a role that matches the type of expertise or perspective you need.
LESSON 3.4

Context, Instructions & Examples

AI works better when it understands the situation surrounding your request.

Context

Context tells the AI what is happening.

I manage a small community training centre. We communicate with students mainly through WhatsApp.

Instructions

Instructions tell the AI what to do.

Create a reminder message about an upcoming registration deadline.

Examples

Examples can show the style or structure you want.

Use a friendly but professional style. Example opening: "Dear Student, we would like to remind you..."

Complete Prompt

I manage a small community training centre and communicate with students mainly through WhatsApp. Create a reminder message about an upcoming registration deadline. Use a friendly but professional tone. Keep it under 80 words. Example opening: "Dear Student, we would like to remind you..."
LESSON 3.5

Improving & Refining Prompts

Your first prompt does not have to be perfect.

One of the most powerful prompting skills is learning how to improve your request after seeing the first response.

Start
Write a social media post about our computer course.
Add Context
Write a social media post promoting a beginner computer course for unemployed youth and job seekers.
Add Tone
Write a motivating and professional social media post promoting a beginner computer course for unemployed youth and job seekers.
Add Format
Write a motivating and professional social media post promoting a beginner computer course for unemployed youth and job seekers. Keep it under 100 words. Include a strong call to action. Use short paragraphs.
Key Lesson: Each improvement gives the AI more useful information.

Remember: Prompting is often a conversation. Ask, review, correct and refine.

LESSON 3.6

Common Prompting Mistakes

❌ Mistake 1 — Being Too Vague

Tell me about business.

Better:

Explain five common challenges faced by small businesses and give one practical solution for each.

❌ Mistake 2 — Giving Too Little Context

AI cannot automatically know your situation. Tell it what it needs to know.

❌ Mistake 3 — Asking for Too Many Things at Once

Very large requests can become confusing. Break complicated tasks into smaller steps when necessary.

❌ Mistake 4 — Not Specifying the Audience

Explain artificial intelligence.

Better:

Explain artificial intelligence to a beginner who has never used an AI tool before. Use simple language and three everyday examples.

❌ Mistake 5 — Not Reviewing the Result

Even a well-written prompt does not guarantee a correct answer. Always review important information.

❌ Mistake 6 — Giving Sensitive Information

🔐 Protect your information: Avoid unnecessarily entering passwords, banking details, confidential documents or sensitive personal information into AI tools.
Golden Rule: Never assume that an AI response is automatically correct simply because it sounds confident or professional.
LESSON 3.7

🚀 Practical Prompt Engineering Challenge

Build Your Own Powerful Prompt

Choose one real task from your work, study, business or everyday life.

Step 1 — Choose a Task

  • Write an email
  • Create a study plan
  • Develop a business idea
  • Create a social media post
  • Improve a CV
  • Prepare for an interview
  • Write a report
  • Plan an event

Step 2 — Add a Role

Tell AI what role it should take.

Step 3 — Add Context

Explain your situation.

Step 4 — Give the Task

Clearly explain what you want AI to produce.

Step 5 — Give Instructions

Specify tone, audience, length, language or other requirements.

Step 6 — Specify the Format

Tell AI whether you want a list, table, email, report, plan or another format.

📝 Your Prompt Template

Act as a [ROLE]. Context: [EXPLAIN YOUR SITUATION] Task: [EXPLAIN WHAT YOU WANT AI TO DO] Audience: [WHO IS THIS FOR?] Instructions: [STYLE / TONE / LENGTH / LANGUAGE / OTHER REQUIREMENTS] Format: [HOW SHOULD THE RESPONSE BE STRUCTURED?]
Challenge: Now create your own prompt and test it with an AI tool. After receiving the response, improve your prompt and try again. Compare the first and second results.
